The Making of a Cult. Carlo Crivelli's The Vision of the Blessed Gabriele and the construction of sanctity

In 1456 Gabriele Ferretti, an Anconiatian Franciscan friar of an ancient noble family which has been proclamed a Saint for his entire life, died. The Order and the family immediately started celebrating his memorial cult, erecting a funerary monument, commissioning a painting to the most famous artist of the region, and requiring to the Pope a sanctification process. He was later officially declared Blessed and is known for many miracles, that attracted devotees and offers, honouring and enriching the church and the family. His cult is still alive today.

Some specific elements have been choosen to emphasize his holiness and a precise visual code has been displayed to depict him as a saint. A process of visual analogy and imaginery construction has been used. How is it possible to construct sanctity? How is a cult created?
