Built on the contrast between the dark armour and the theatrical effect of the red hanging, the painting generates an impression of strength. The violence, suggested by the armour pieces, is softened by the peaceful expression of Joan. Kneeling, she seems immersed in her dialogue with God.

Rather than a battlefield scene, Rubens preferred here to focus on the spiritual fight as key to military successes.
