Tailoring and trade.

Since the Fourteenth Century, the economy of Italy was sharply expanding, and the demand for more elaborate garments gave birth to numerous tailor’s workshops.

The tailor’s craft was a proper art, which required accurate training to learn as the textiles were delicate and expensive. This painting, originally from Northern Italy, depicts a high-level artisanal talent. His professionalism is demonstrated by a neat and elegant appearance. The tailor is engaged in the cutting of a piece of black cloth, holding a pair of sharp scissors. He seems to have been suddenly interrupted in his task by the painter who immortalised him in an instant image.
